Program Overview

The MCP was created to assist in improving diversity in Cleveland’s legal market. This program provides the opportunity for qualified minority law students to work as law clerks or summer associates in a firm, legal department or government agency at the end of their first year of law school. This experience better prepares the students to compete for permanent legal positions in the future, while providing employers with the opportunity to work with well-qualified minority students. Since its inception, the MCP has involved over 40 of Cleveland’s law firms, legal departments and government agencies and has assisted over 300 law students in obtaining valuable clerkship positions.

The Importance of the Program

The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association recognizes the importance of addressing the issue of the lack of minorities in the legal profession. The mission of the Minority Clerkship Program is to bring together law firms, legal departments and historically underrepresented minority law students. The purpose is to ensure that employers and minority law students obtain exposure to the other. We believe that this will help to foster a culture of improved diversity and inclusion.
