About the Competition

The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is pleased to host the 32nd Annual Cuyahoga District and Regional Competitions for teams from Northeast Ohio in 2015. The Ohio Mock Trial Cuyahoga District Competition was held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 and the Regional Competition will be held on Feb. 27 (NEW DATE).

Each year volunteer judges and attorneys serve as competition judicial panelists.  At this done-in-a-day volunteer opportunity, volunteers have the chance to observe the region's finest budding legal minds in an exciting afternoon of competition.  This year’s fictional case centers on a student’s Eighth Amendment claims of cruel and unusual punishment following an injury at a juvenile correctional institution when guards responded to a cafeteria food fight.

The CMBA congratulates all participants and volunteer judicial panelists for another successful Ohio Mock Trial Cuyahoga District Competition on Friday, Jan. 30. Thirty-six teams from 11 local high schools presented their best legal arguments before 55 volunteer judges and attorneys who scored their efforts. Our sincere thanks to the Court of Common Pleas and the Cleveland Municipal Court for allowing us to use their courtrooms for this special event, and to the Justice Center staff for their gracious assistance.

Congratulations to the following 9 teams that will advance to the Regional Competition Feb. 27:

  • Orange High School Teams Apollo, Ares, Poseidon, and Zeus
  • Solon High School Teams Alito, Kennedy, and Ginsburg
  • St. Edward High School Team Green
  • Shaw High School Leadership Academy Team Cardinals for Justice

This is Ohio’s largest academic competition and Cuyahoga County high school participation is strong — with the help of volunteers from the legal community, last year over 400 students representing 16 high schools in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties were provided the opportunity to hone their communication, analytical, and courtroom skills. Students are judged on their understanding of the case facts and applicable law, the roles of the attorney and witnesses at trial, and courtroom procedures and decorum. More than 60 volunteer judicial panelists — judges, magistrates, and attorneys — presided over the trials and scored the events in 2014.

The Ohio Mock Trial program is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE). The OCLRE is sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio State Bar Association, Attorney General’s Office and ACLU Foundation of Ohio. The Cuyahoga District and Regional Competitions are sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, with funding support from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Foundation.

Thank you to the more than 60 volunteer judges, magistrates, and attorneys who helped make this program a success for the students who worked so hard in preparation in 2014.  We were proud to host over 400 students from 16  high schools (36 teams total).  The fictional case in 2014 involved alleged violations of students’ First and Fourth Amendment rights by high school officials in response to student protests over the corporate naming of the school’s football field.

The Cuyahoga District Competition was held at the Justice Center on January 31, 2014 while the Cuyahoga Regional Competition was held at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse on February 21.

Special congratulations to Orange High School, whose Team DaVinci finished second statewide in the State Tournament held March 6-8 in Columbus!  Congratulations as well to Team Roberts from Solon High School, which made it to the final four.  Click here to view a video of the final championship round, featuring Cuyahoga County’s own Orange High School Team DaVinci versus the state champions from Sylvania Southview High School.
