In response to the needs of our members and legal community, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association launched this new program in February 2013. The Pillars Program was created to provide support for unemployed/under-employed attorneys through a series of programs to serve as a catalyst to invigorate your current position. Whether you are an unemployed lawyer, in a career transition, or just beginning the job search process, the structure and support provided by the Pillars Program will be invaluable.
The planned sessions will be led by knowledgeable experts offering practical advice, tips, and resources for use in your search for employment. If nothing else, these sessions will give you the opportunity to connect and share with people that are in a similar situation.
The intention of the program is to not only breathe new life into your job hunt, but into you as well. Searching for a job in this economy is not only difficult, it can be discouraging as well. Rebuild the way you search for employment with the comprehensive guidance provided by the Pillar Program.

Session 2: SPEAKING WITH CONFIDENCE TO THE BIG DOGS: A New Perspective on Interviewing (March 18, 2013)
What can you do to make a memorable impression when interviewing for a job? In this seminar, you will discover how your perspective and confidence affect how you are perceived by the interviewer, also known as the Big Dog. You will leave with a different perspective of what to expect during an interview and how you can make the Big Dogs more comfortable with you. The strategies revealed will empower you to effectively connect and build authentic relationships with your interviewer while finding the job that is right for you. Seminar topics:
- Why interviews are a beginning point as opposed to an ending point
- How to take the uneasiness out of interview
- How to transform your interviews into enjoyable and enlightening experiences
- What relationships, rapport and reflection have in common
- How to change a "no" into a "yes"
Session 3: CREATING A GAMECHANGER RESUME - (May 31, 2013)
Smart jobseekers know their resume has to do more than list job responsibilities – it needs to set you apart from other applicants and tell a compelling story about “what happened” and the terrific results you generate. We’ll cover resume formats, using action verbs and metrics, your elevator speech, and other key elements that HR looks for in selecting their first round interviews.
Kelly Blazek, also known as the Job Search House Mother, has been sharing NE Ohio job openings in the marketing, PR, fundraising, media and design industry since 2003. She has over 7,100 subscribers to her job bank (now one of the largest in the country within the marketing field) along with 2,200 Twitter followers and over 10,000 viewers monthly to her Job Search Strategies blog. However, this is just a hobby: Kelly is a manufacturing communications consultant with nearly 10 years’ experience on global HR leadership teams for GE, Eaton, Ingersoll Rand and Apex Tool Group. She has a significant legal industry background as well, serving for six years as the Director of Marketing for Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP. She is a frequent speaker at local jobseeker groups on resumes, maximizing LinkedIn during a job search, and professional presence.
Session 4: HOW TO MAKE TEMPORARY AND CONTRACT WORK WORK FOR YOU (October 7, 2013)
The legal market is changing and many attorneys are turning to contract and temporary work for employment for a variety of reasons. In this 4th session of the Pillars Program, our presenters will address all facets of this type of work, including the outdated "stigma" of contract or temp work, the process by which to find it, the benefits of these positions, and how this work is available for experienced practitioners as well as new lawyers.
