Ohio Mock Trial Cuyahoga Competition

The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association was pleased to host the 30th Annual Cuyahoga District and Regional Competitions for teams from Northeast Ohio in 2013.

The CMBA extends its sincere thanks to the 74 volunteers who served as judicial panelists at the Ohio Mock Trial Cuyahoga District and Regional Competitions in 2013, and congratulates the more than 500 high school students and their supporters who participated in two excellent days of competition on Feb. 8 and Feb. 22.

Congratulations to Orange High School Team Shanghai, which finished second statewide in the State Tournament March 7-9, 2013!

Each year volunteer judges and attorneys serve as competition judicial panelists.  At this done-in-a-day volunteer opportunity, volunteers have the chance to observe the region's finest budding legal minds in an exciting afternoon of competition.  The fictional case in 2013 asked whether a student under suspicion of arson and murder was improperly interrogated and detained during the police’s investigation in violation of the student’s 5th and 14th Amendment rights.

This is Ohio’s largest academic competition and Cuyahoga County high school participation is strong – with the help of volunteers from the legal community in 2013, over 450 students representing 18 local high schools were provided the opportunity to hone their communication, analytical, and courtroom skills.  Students are judged on their understanding of the case facts and applicable law, the roles of the attorney and witnesses at trial, and courtroom procedures and decorum.  74 volunteer judicial panelists – judges, magistrates, and attorneys from Cuyahoga and Lake Counties – presided over the trials and scored the events in 2013.

The Ohio Mock Trial program is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE). The OCLRE is sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio State Bar Association, Attorney General’s Office and ACLU Foundation of Ohio. The Cuyahoga District and Regional Competitions are sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, with funding support from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Foundation.

If you are interested in volunteering as a judicial panelist in 2014, please contact Competition Coordinator Jessica Paine by email or by calling (216) 696-3525 ext. 4462.

Thank you to the more than 80 volunteer judges, magistrates, and attorneys who helped make this program a success for the students who worked so hard in preparation in 2012.  We were proud to host over 450 students representing 16 area high schools from Cuyahoga, Lake, Richland, Summit, and Trumbull Counties.  The fictional case asked whether police seizure of a suspect’s cell phone GPS records without a warrant violates his/her Fourth Amendment rights.

The Cuyahoga District Competition was held at the Justice Center on February 3, 2012 while the Cuyahoga Regional Competition was held at the Cuyahoga County Courthouse on February 24, 2012.

Congratulations to the following teams that advanced from the Cuyahoga Regional Competition to the State Tournament!

  • Ashland High School – Team Red
  • Mentor High School – Team Snollygoster
  • Orange High School – Team Jefferson
  • Solon High School – Teams R.B. Ginsburg, J. Roberts, and S. Sotomayor
