Local Bar Associations Partner to Fundraise for Environmental Internships

CLEVELAND – Feb. 10, 2010 – The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association (CMBA) and the Akron Bar Association will present Love, Law & Chocolate on Thursday, Feb. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Brecksville. The event, created by the Akron Bar Association, presents chocolate lovers the opportunity to network and indulge in the creations of guest “chocolatiers,” while, at the same time, raise money to support the Northeast Ohio Environmental Internship Programs.

Guest “chocolatiers” planning to share their culinary creations include: Judge Benita Pearson of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio; Jeff Holland, Trustee for the Western Reserve Land Conservancy; Bill Skowronski, District Chief Ohio EPA; Larry G. Poulos, President of the Akron Bar Association; Barbara Roman, President-Elect of the CMBA; and Donnie Long, Executive Director of the Akron Bar Association.

Although both bar associations will offer independent environmental internships, this joint fundraising event serves to increase the awareness of and funding for environmental internship programs regionally. The Northeast Ohio Environmental Internship Program awarded by the CMBA is managed by its Environmental Law Section.  The internship program provides financial assistance to law students so they can accept unpaid summer jobs in environmental law with government agencies or environmental organizations, providing students with the type of real world experience that impresses future full-time employers. In 2010, the CMBA Environmental Law Section awarded two $3,000 summer internships. This year, through the support of Love, Law & Chocolate, and other independent fundraising efforts, both bar associations intend to award multiple internships.

General admission is $10 and tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. The ticket includes dessert and beverages. Admission is not tax-deductible as a charitable expense. Contributions to the Northeast Ohio Environmental Internship Program are encouraged and can be made at the event. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Sleepy Hollow Golf Club is located at 9445 Brecksville Road, Brecksville, Ohio.

Prior to the chocolate indulgence, attorneys may attend a one-hour continuing legal education (CLE) program presented by Attorney Jeff Holland that will provide an overview of voluntary land conservation and an exciting new tax incentive recently passed by Congress.
