VOLUNTEER JUDICIAL PANELISTS NEEDED FOR OHIO MOCK TRIAL
CUYAHOGA DISTRICT COMPETITION – FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 2009

Judges, magistrates and attorneys are needed to serve as volunteer judicial panelists in the Ohio Mock Trial Cuyahoga District Competition. The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is hosting the 25th Annual District Competition for teams from Northeast Ohio and we would be pleased to include you in this special law-related education event. The Competition will take place at the Justice Center on Friday, January 30, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to make this program a success for the students who work so hard in preparation for the mock trials – last year we hosted 400 students representing 31 teams from 14 area high schools.

The Ohio Mock Trial program is conducted under the auspices of the Ohio Center for Law Related Education (“OCLRE”). The OCLRE is sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Ohio State Bar Association, Attorney General’s Office and ACLU Foundation of Ohio. The Cuyahoga District Competition is sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, with funding support from the Cleveland Bar Foundation.

An orientation lunch meeting for judicial panelists will be held at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Center at noon on Tuesday, January 13, 2009. This year’s fictional case asks whether a school policy requiring proof of citizenship or legal status violates students’ equal protection rights under the 14th Amendment. In this year’s competition as in years past teams will advance from the District Competition to the Regional Competition on February 20 before continuing on to the State Tournament.

If you are interested in volunteering as a judicial panelist, please fill out this form and submit it online or print it and fax the completed form to (216) 696-2413. For more information, please contact Mary Groth at (216) 696-3525 ext. 5004 or mgroth@clemetrobar.org. In this competition, courtrooms in which to hold the trials are needed and greatly appreciated. If you are a judge or magistrate and would like to offer use of your courtroom the day of the competition, please indicate below. Thank you.
