To become a guardian ad litem for the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, attorneys must attend New Guardian ad Litem Training (pre-service training), which the Guardian ad Litem Project offers annually in the fall. This year, New GAL Training has been scheduled for November 13 and November 20, 2009. We are holding this training cooperatively with the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court.

The Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court requires GALs to be attorneys in good standing in Ohio, to maintain professional liability insurance, and to comply with Rule 48 of the Rules of Superintendence. Once an attorney completes New Guardian ad Litem Training, the attorney must submit an  Attorney Information and Statement of Interest form  to the Guardian ad Litem Project. Once the attorney is approved as a guardian ad litem for the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, a mentor is assigned to assist the new GAL as they begin accepting GAL appointments.
